Google Tilt Brush, Oculus Quest, Virtual Reality, and Digital Art: what do they have in common?

Virtual Reality represents the ability to deceive sensory perception by modeling it at will for recreational, learning, artistic, or work purposes.

But how to do it? It is soon said …

We all learned as children that the 5 senses are the ones that guide us to discover the world.

Touch, hearing, sight, taste, and smell guide our experience of reality. In other words, our entire conception of reality is the result of a sophisticated combination of sensory information processed by the brain in the act of making sense of physical stimuli.

Consequently, therefore, if the senses are altered with the help of some mechanism, the perceived reality will be distorted and artificial.

The objective of Virtual Reality is precisely this: to create an artificial environment in which our senses are deceived so that we can perceive reality differently from the natural one, most of the time managing to arouse indescribable emotions.

A Virtual Reality system consists of a series of devices capable of deciphering information on the subject’s actions ( input tools ), which are communicated and integrated in real-time by the computer to build a dynamic three-dimensional world, to be then returned to the subject through particular tools for using information ( output tools ).

Based on the output tools used, it is possible to distinguish  3 different types of Virtual Reality :

  • immersive : the reality that immerses the user through sophisticated sensory stimulation
  • semi-immersive: reality made up of surround rear-projection screens that reproduce computer stereoscopic images and project them onto the walls, with different shapes and degrees of convexity
  • non-immersive: similar to a window through which the user can see the world in 3D

Google Tilt Brush: What is it?

Google Tilt Brush is a VR design and illustration program for painting your virtual world in 3D.

You can download the application for an affordable price (currently around $20) and use it on the following Virtual Reality devices :

  • HTC hive
  • Oculus rift
  • Oculus quest
  • Windows mixed reality
  • Valve Index
  • Playstation VR

What can you do with the Google Tilt Brush?

By merging the potential of Google Tilt Brush and Oculus Quest (the Facebook VR Viewer) you can give space to your imagination by creating your virtual universe through:

  • three-dimensional brush strokes
  • Job
  • luce
  • and even fire

With the VR viewer and the joysticks, you have real virtual hands at your disposal, thanks to which you can transform gestures into 3D drawings, using a virtual brush and palette.

There are various functions and innovative drawing techniques in VR: for example, you can upload images from the web and “teleport” them into your virtual space, or you can use materials that would be impossible to use in reality, such as fire, stars, and snowflakes.

“Your room is your canvas. The palette is your imagination. The possibilities are endless.”

These are the words of Google which, after making improvements to the application for several years, has finally released Tilt Brush as an open-source project.

This means that despite the various upgrades made, Tilt Brush can be further modified and improved by developers. The application code is publicly visible on Github
